#BlackLivesMatter
Dear Friends,
Black lives matter.
We mourn and condemn the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Tony McDade. Take a moment to say their names aloud. Each of these names had a life, a purpose, and a future. That is no longer the case. These are only the most recent lives taken from a 400 year history of systemic racism in our country. There are hundreds of thousands other names as well.
This killing has to stop.
We stand in peaceful solidarity to change the system and to find ways to heal our divisions. Listening, understanding, and taking action are at the core of this.
As we examine our organization, we will work to continue to create a space that welcomes people of color, develop more partnerships with musicians and composers that are comprised of people of color, and work to support new music composed/arranged by people of color to tell the stories of people of color.
We believe that a better life is possible where black lives matter to everyone. We are also aware of the many obstacles that stand in the way. Our hope is that through our music and actions, we can help facilitate long-term meaningful change. We invite you be a part of that change with us.
