History
Founded in 2002 by Robert Glor, Ellen Chase and Cheryl Hunter, originally as “OurSong, The Atlanta Gay and Lesbian Chorus”, “OurSong Atlanta” is an auditioned, mixed voice chorus, comprised of singers from across the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. Under the direction of Dr. Robert Glor, the chorus provides a supportive and affirming experience seeking to enrich the lives of the Atlanta gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer community, and its allies. The chorus has developed a reputation for performing diverse choral music at the highest standard of musical excellence and style. Noted for the innovative, artistic programs they present, OurSong has garnered acclaim from a wide variety of audiences.
OurSong has logged over 25,000 miles in the pursuit of spreading beauty through music. Internationally, the chorus has sung in Montreal, Quebec; Dublin, Ireland; Berlin and Munich, Germany; Prague, Czechia; and Milan and Bologna Italy. Closer to home, OurSong has performed in Miami, Florida; Denver, Colorado; Huntsville, Alabama; Macon and Augusta, performing outreach concerts in our home state of Georgia, . The chorus has also had countless performances in the Atlanta area, in addition to its regularly scheduled concerts and cabarets.
OurSong is also privileged to appear regularly on one of Atlanta’s NPR radio stations, in WABE’s “Atlanta Music Scene” hosted by Robert Hubert. The chorus has performed twice with the world-renowned Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The first performance was in the “Sci-Fi Spectacular” with George Takei under the direction of Jack Everly in November 2014. The second performance was in the “Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton” concert in October 2015 under the direction of Ted Sperling. OurSong has also performed with such first-rate musicians as Holly Near and Matt Alber. The chorus was honored to perform for the Georgia ACDA conference in 2012 at Spivey Hall. In 2019, OurSong had the pleasure of performing with Hugh Jackman at State Farm Arena during his world tour “The Man, The Music, The Show”. And in 2024, in a first time collaboration in the Atlanta Queer arts community, OurSong and the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra, performed Christopher Tin’s “The Lost Birds (An Extinction Elegy)”.
OurSong has three albums of recorded music, all of which were produced in Georgia. “Out of a Dream” was recorded in Cannon Chapel at Emory University in Atlanta and released in 2008. “Voices of Earth” was recorded in the illustrious Spivey Hall at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia, and was released in 2012. This second album features no fewer than three commissions proudly sponsored by OurSong, by David Childs, David Dickau, and Rosephanye Powell. OurSong’s third album, “Requiem for the Living,” was also recorded in Spivey Hall, and the recording features OurSong, soprano soloist Dr. Wanda Yang Temko, and chamber orchestra, featuring Spivey’s 79-rank, three manual, 4413-pipe Albert Schweitzer Memorial Organ.
